SaskScapes

SaskScapes is a podcast hosted and created by Kevin Power, it features stories of arts, culture and heritage in Saskatchewan. The first two seasons of SaskScapes were sponsored exclusively by SaskCulture www.saskculture.ca as part of the Community Engagement Animateur program. Funding to the cultural sector is provided by the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation.

They are proud to call this town "my town". Rocanville is located in south-eastern Saskatchewan near the Qu'appelle Valley and Manitoba border.  A town rich in history, a booming potash industry and a beautiful 13 building museum which acts as the cultural "hub".  Join Kevin Power has he attends the Rocanville market at the museum which is held once a month during the summer.  This episodes features a few of the vendors, artists, musicians, and dedicated young folks would bring tremendous energy to the market. In the wake of raging forest fires throughout northern Saskatchewan, thousands of evacuees were brought together in temporary shelters. One such shelter was at Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation, near Duck Lake, SK.  Kevin Power meets with three guests: an evacuee, a social worker in mental health, and band councillor for Beardy's. The arena has become a temporary shelter and affectionally known as "Rez Cross". Beardy's and Okemaisis First Nation has show the the generosity of spirit that defines their community.

Season two has launched and it's great to be back! It promises to be another great season traveling Saskatchewan and sharing your stories.  I can't think of a better way to start this season than with my guest Lynda Haverstock.  Lynda shares stories from her younger life, musical life, public life, and yes, personal life. Named in 2000 as Saskatchewan's 19th Lieutenant Governor, Lynda is arguably one of the most influential people in this province. This episode has all of the humor, humilty, passion, integrity and honesty that I've come to expect from Lynda. And we wouldn't want her any other way!

This is a special bonus edition of SaskScapes being posted during a time when the northern communities of Saskatchewan are facing a very difficult situation. Over 100 forest fires continue to burn and have forced thousands of residents out of their homes. The evacuees have moved swiftly to various locations across the province without a great deal of time to take all of their belongings.  Sheryl Kimbley has put a call out to local musicians in the Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert areas to come together in a show of support and hold benefit concerts to raise funds. The support so far has been overwhelming. This podcast was recorded in Saskatoon on June 30, 2015. If you are in the Regina area on July 4, 2015 or Prince Albert on July 5th, come by the venues announced in this podcast and show your support.
